The FBI suspects that people from the circle closest to President Donald Trump were in contact with the Russians during the last White House election campaign, CNN said on Wednesday.
These contacts, according to CNN, citing US officials on condition of anonymity, “could” have been aimed at coordinating the leak of information to hurt Trump’s Democratic challenger Hillary Clinton.
FBI Director James Comey appeared Monday in Congress, where he confirmed that his agency is investigating the alleged interference from the Kremlin in the election, as well as possible contacts between the Trump circle and the Russians.
“That includes investigating the nature of any link between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts,” Comey said.
According to CNN, the FBI suspects that these contacts took place, although it is not “conclusive” information at this point in the investigation.
The FBI continues to review travel records, intelligence, phone records, and meeting reports.
Asked by CTN News to comment further, the White House declined to comment on this information, although on Monday it denied the existence of evidence of the alleged electoral plot between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.
For White House spokesman Sean Spicer, to be investigating that alleged collusion between the Trump team and Russia “and to have proof of this are two different things.”
