Back In August of 2012, as Obama was heading into the reelection stage against GOP nominee Romney, Barack Obama issued “red line” warnings to Syria regarding chemical weapons use, Obama bowed to intervene in the conflict with military force if the regime President Bashar al-Assad used chemical gas on any of his people.
“We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized. That would change my calculus,” Obama said on August 20 of that year. “That would change my equation. . . . We’re monitoring that situation very carefully. We have put together a range of contingency plans.”
