Wikileaks: The United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has ordered its spies to gather information on the 2012 French presidential election, according to a seven-page document released late Thursday by Wikileaks.
The document, which Wikileaks described as “work orders,” suggests that US spies wanted an internal view of the presidential race, including details on party funding, internal rivalries and future attitudes toward the United States.
Although it was striking that Wikileaks published a supposed secret document of the CIA, the orders seemed to allude habitual tasks of collection of information.
The French media, focusing on the current campaign for the elections in two months, paid relatively less attention to the publication on Friday.
The CIA declined to comment on the publication. Wikileaks did not respond to questions about the origin of the document but indicated in an email that it was authentic.
